Katrin Nele Mäger is an expert at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture at Tallinn University of Technology. She received her doctorate in civil engineering for research involving the development of a novel calculation model for the fire resistance of timber structures. The findings of her doctoral research have contributed to revisions incorporated into the new generation of Eurocode 5, Part 1-2.

Dr Mäger’s research focuses on the development of European fire-resistance calculation methods, the modelling of construction-material properties and the performance of structures under fire conditions. Alongside her academic work, she teaches physics and civil engineering at upper-secondary-school level, helping to encourage young people’s interest in technology and engineering.

Katrin Nele Mäger is a member of the Estonian delegation to CEN/TC 250/SC 5, the European standardisation subcommittee responsible for the development and revision of design standards for timber structures. She was also a member of the working group that prepared the background document for the new generation of Eurocode 5, Part 1-2, Structural Fire Design of Timber Structures. Several of the calculation methods included in the new standard derive directly from her research.

Dr Mäger has carried out a number of fundamental European-level studies concerned with improving the accuracy of fire-resistance calculations for timber structures and has contributed to product-development work undertaken by established European building-material manufacturers. In addition to conducting scientific fire tests in laboratories in Sweden, Norway and Switzerland, she led, in cooperation with the Estonian Rescue Board, a full-scale compartment fire test involving a two-storey cross-laminated timber building at the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences Rescue College training ground.
