Raphael Eder is an Austrian architect and the co-founder and managing director of the Vienna-based practice S.E.A. Shibukawa Eder Architects. He established the Japanese-Austrian studio with architect Misa Shibukawa in 2007. The practice is informed by an exchange between the two cultural traditions and by an interest in the relationships between interior and exterior space, different architectural scales and the people who inhabit them.
Eder graduated from TU Wien in 1996 and from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1998. Before establishing his practice in Austria, he worked in Tokyo, London and Amsterdam. From 2008 to 2017, he taught in the Department of Housing at TU Wien, and since 2011 he has served on juries for international architectural competitions.
S.E.A.’s work encompasses educational, residential and cultural buildings, urban planning and spatial interventions at a range of scales. Its projects include Neulengbach High School, AHS Wien West, the Anna and Alfred Wödl Education Campus, Zirkusgasse High School and the Fabrik 1230 cultural centre. The practice places particular emphasis on creating socially effective spaces of lasting value while reducing environmental impact and improving energy performance.
The studio has also examined the possibilities of circular timber construction. Its 2022 competition proposal for the Austrian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka envisaged reusing the modular timber structures of the Austrian Parliament’s temporary pavilions, together with reclaimed timber from demolished Japanese buildings. The system was designed to be dismantled and used again after the Expo, extending the structural components across successive building lifecycles.
