Karin Harkmaa is an architect at the firm 3+1 Arhitektid, whose main field of work in recent years has become the architecture of educational buildings. In her practice, she has worked on projects of very different scales – from exhibition designs to the planning of public buildings – but she is most dedicated to creating contemporary learning and growth environments.
Karin has studied and taught at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Estonian Academy of Arts. A year spent living in Switzerland deepened her interest in practical, simple architecture that values honest materials – principles that are also characteristic of her work today.
She has been one of the authors of Haapsalu Basic School, Narva Estonian Gymnasium and Basic School, and the Võsu Basic School and Kindergarten, which was awarded the main prize of Estonian Wooden Building of the Year 2025. Currently, she is working on the design of the new Kohtla-Järve school.
