Dr. Matti Kuittinen is one of the Nordic region's leading voices on the future of sustainable construction. An architect, researcher and policy expert, he has spent his career connecting architectural quality with climate responsibility, helping to shape how the built environment can respond to the challenges of the 21st century.
As Associate Professor of Sustainable Construction at Aalto University's Department of Architecture, his research focuses on whole-life carbon assessment, circular economy, resource-efficient construction and the development of new building materials and methods. His work is driven by a simple but profound question: how can we create better places to live while remaining within the environmental limits of our planet?
Before joining academia, Kuittinen worked at Finland's Ministry of the Environment, where he developed the country's national whole-life carbon assessment methodology for buildings, coordinated Nordic collaboration on sustainable construction and helped initiate the Nordic Bauhaus programme. His work has contributed significantly to the transition from sustainability as an aspiration to sustainability as measurable practice.
Alongside research and policy, Kuittinen has remained closely connected to architecture itself. He has designed experimental sustainable buildings, participated in humanitarian construction projects and continues to advocate for an approach that values not only lower carbon emissions, but also beauty, longevity, adaptability and the intelligent use of resources.
