Hermann Kaufmann is widely recognized as a pioneer of contemporary timber architecture.
With more than four decades of experience, he has completed numerous trailblazing projects that have earned acclaim both in his native region and on the international stage. His work is driven by a commitment to advancing timber construction as a sustainable and future-oriented architectural approach.
Born in 1955 in Vorarlberg into a family of carpenters, Kaufmann studied architecture at the University of Innsbruck and later at TU Vienna. Early in his career, he discovered a passion for teaching, which led him to academic positions in Liechtenstein, Graz, and Ljubljana. From 2002 to 2021, he held the Chair of Design and Timber Construction at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
In 1983, Kaufmann established his own architectural firm in Vorarlberg. Since 2017, the practice has continued under the name HK Architekten in partnership with colleagues. Today, the studio employs nearly 30 people and continues to set new benchmarks in timber architecture both locally and internationally.
